Resurrection

Then some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, saying: Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man's brother dies, having a wife, and he dies without children, his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.  Now there were seven brothers. And the first took a wife, and died without children. And the second took her as wife, and he died childless.  Then the third took her, and in like manner the seven also; and they left no children, and died.  Last of all the woman died also. Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife does she become? For all seven had her as wife.

And Jesus answered and said to them, The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. But even Moses showed in the burning bush passage that the dead are raised, when he called the Lord 'the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' For He is not the God of the dead but of the living, for all live to Him. Luke 20:27-38.

These things He said, and after that He said to them, Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.

Then His disciples said, Lord, if he sleeps he will get well.

However, Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about taking rest in sleep. Then Jesus said to them plainly, Lazarus is dead.  And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, that you may believe. Nevertheless let us go to him.

Then Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with Him.

So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days.  Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles away. And many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him, but Mary was sitting in the house.

Then Martha said to Jesus,
Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.

Jesus said to her, Your brother will rise again.

Martha said to Him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.  And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?

She said to Him, Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.

And when she had said these things, she went her way and secretly called Mary her sister, saying, The Teacher has come and is calling for you.

As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came to Him.  Now Jesus had not yet come into the town, but was in the place where Martha met Him. Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and comforting her, when they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, She is going to the tomb to weep there.

Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying to Him, Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.

Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled.

And He said,
Where have you laid him?

They said to Him, Lord, come and see.

Jesus wept.  Then the Jews said, See how He loved him!

And some of them said, Could not this Man, who opened the eyes of the blind, also have kept this man from dying?

Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it.  Jesus said, Take away the stone.

Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him,
Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.

Jesus said to her, Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?

Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.

Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth!

And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with grave clothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, Loose him, and let him go. John 11:11-44.

Women received their dead raised to life again. And others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.  Hebrews 11:25.

Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.  Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments.

Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them,
Why do you seek the living among the dead?  He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee,
saying,
The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.  Luke 24:1-7

Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.  Acts 2:29-32

Then He said to Thomas, Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.  John 20:27.

Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, Peace to you.

But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit.

And He said to them,
Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.

When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.

But while they still did not believe for joy, and marveled, He said to them,
Have you any food here?

So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb. And He took it and ate in their presence. Luke 24:36-43.

Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand,  by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you--unless you believed in vain.  For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve.  After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep. After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles.  1 Corinthians 15:1-7.

Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.
For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.

Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth--those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.
John 5:25-29.

If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable. 1 Corinthians 15:19.
