Days

Biblical Days.

A day that is mentioned in the Scripture is generally a significant day.  There is: 1) That Day, 2) Day of the Lord, 3) Day of Wrath, 4) Last Day, 5) Last Days.  Other significant days are mentioned in the Scripture but let us deal only with the above days.

1. That Day.  In the Old Testament ‘that day’ refers to either a day of wrath or the coming of Jesus Christ. If the context is about a specific king or nation ‘that day’ refers to a day of wrath.

In Isaiah 4:2, 11:10 and Zechariah 2:11, 13:1 ‘that day’ is referring to the time of the coming of Jesus Christ.

In Matthew 24:36, Mark 13:32 and others ‘that day’ is referring to the coming day of judgment.

In Matthew 26:29, Mark 14:25, John 14:20 ‘that day’ refers to the coming of the kingdom/church.

In Luke 10:12, 17:31, 21:34 ‘that day’ is referring to the coming judgment on Jerusalem and its destruction.

2. In the New Testament the ‘day of the Lord’ refers to either the present reign of Jesus Christ or to the coming day of judgment.

3. In the New Testament the ‘day of wrath’ refers to the day of judgment.

4. The ‘last day’ in the New Testament refers to the day of the resurrection of the dead and the judgment. See John 6:39, 44, 54, 11:24, 12:48.

5. The ‘last days’ refer to the days in which man has lived since the day of Pentecost when Peter preached the first gospel sermon in Acts 2 and will live in until the end of time.

Joel 2:28, And it shall come to pass afterward [in the last days] that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions.

Acts 2:17, And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams.

Peter is here showing that the ‘last days’ were prophesied by Joel, in the above passage, and that they would begin with Pentecost and last until the end of time.

2 Timothy 3:1, But know this, that in the [these] last days perilous times will come:

Paul is telling Timothy that perilous times were coming for the Christians. Those perilous times were the times of persecution by the Romans of the Christians.

Hebrews 1:2, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;

At first God spoke to the people through the fathers of each clan, next He spoke to the people through Moses and the Law, in these ‘last days’ He has spoken to us through His Son.

2 Peter 3:3, knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the [these] last days, walking according to their own lusts,

Scoffers have been around since the first century. They have multiplied since that time.

The ‘last days’ began on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2 and will continue until the end of time. The ‘last days’ are not just a short time before Jesus comes again.
